My first acquaintance with Keith was through the late Richard Chaloner, who just passed last week. It was in the early 70’s when Richard chaired the Big Brothers Board. I accompanied Keith and Richard to several Big Brothers groups to provide some Personal Development training. Shortly later, Keith, Richard and I began one of the first men’s consciousness-raising groups, along with the late Dave Hiller and George Thurtell. It was quite an experience trying to reduce our sexist biases. Then Keith and Lynda , Richard and Norah Chaloner, George and Kay Thurtell, and my wife, Mary, and I started a new group focusing on food and socializing. We met at our homes and a delicious meal was prepared by whomever was hosting, augmented by the rest of us. Keith’s specialty was Mixed Grill. That group also travelled to Portugal where Richard and Norah rented a house that was big enough to accommodate all of us. I particularly remember driving around the Algarve with Keith at the wheel of one car and I drove the other. What I recall was teasing each other about the relative speed at which we drove, he being the slow -poke and me having a “too-heavy” foot. We had some wonderful times and enjoyed our time together. Then for many years Keith and I were in a second men’s group, one that has been running for more than 20 years. The group is still going, most recently attended by Bernie McNamee, John Leacock, Carl Mackie, Jim Brown, Jack Watkins, Keith and me. Finally, what impressed me the most about Keith was his unflappability, if that’s a word. Even when faced with his toughest health challenges and the end of his life, he was stoical and ready to face them with an attitude of acceptance. I learned much from him and will miss him and our far-ranging political discussions.

To Keith's family, he leaves you with a witness of integrity, grit and how to live as a genuine fine human being. Or at least that is how I experienced Keith. He and I circulated in different circles mostly but thanks to Dave Phelps we had a connection that I valued. There were two events that we shared together which I still treasure. Keith, Dave and I were born in the same year and when we turned 60 we went to Port Dover on Friday the 13th of June. Keith drove and he somehow knew how to get by the OPP roadblocks to drive into town. What a blast. I think the three of us had a great day and I had never seen so many motorcycles in one location. Then before the MAID law was passed by Parliament, I was asked by Guelph Third Age Learning to present a lecture on the ethics of medically assisted dying. I did a lot of reading but also spoke to a few people who were living with compromised health, Keith being one of them. What a testament of courage and finding good things in life even if you were on a feeding tube and having other challenges. I went away from Keith so impressed by him. Healing mercies in a time of sorrow. May there be wondrous memories, laughter, even joy in having Keith as one of your gifts in this world. John Buttars

Dear Marsland family
we're saddened by the news of Keth's passing and extend our warmest condolences to all of you. We were happy to receive a Christmas letter from him, written in his pragmatic, positive and warm style. Every time I would pass the house I wondered how Keith was. Not long ago I saw the garbage pail by the road, which made me happy. Oh, Keith is still up to do that, I thought. I was wrong.
Lynda and Keith leave a big void in the neighborhood. They will be missed and fondly remembered.
Many thanks, Kathy, for sending us the link to the obituary.
Our thoughts are with you,
Frieda and Fred

The first time I met Keith was for a job interview in January of 1981. At the end of the interview, I was overwhelmed by how he listened totally and unconditionally. I had never experienced anything like this and I knew I had found a gold mine in Keith and Big Brothers. Keith taught me everything I need to know about social work and in later years I had the chance to tell him so. Keith will always stay in my heart and I will forever talk about how he was my mentor.

I only met Keith and Linda a few times in Scotland but they were both incredibly courageous and positive in the face of everything, and compassionate towards others. Real inspiration! Helen

So sad to hear that Keith has passed. He was a Superman in surviving with all the challenges he faced. Your mom was so incredible too, I met her as a volunteer at the Arboretum - always so enthusiastic - she would always share her journey with Keith, and her stories about her kids and grandchildren - she resonated so much love for her family. Your parents were incredible survivors who face life head on with the challenges they had. It was also so loving of Keith to continue Linda's family updates every Christmas.

My deepest condolences.
Keith had a profound impact on both my life (as a Little Brother) and my mother's - Susan, who Keith hired as a case worker. For my mom that job was the launching point of her career, which led her on to working in child protection until retirement. They remained fast friends until her passing.
For me, the Keith matched me with Big Brothers that made a huge impact in my life and opened me to a broad range of interests. One taught me a great deal about the outdoors and sparked and interest in SCUBA which I pursued later in life. Another introduced me to chess, and a third other pursuits in academics (being a school principal and all!). Taken together I can truly say there is no way my life would have turned out as it has without Keith's impact on it.
