My heartfelt condolence to Doug's friends, relatives and colleagues. I met Doug back in 1992 when I apprenticed as a Funeral Director in Waterloo. He always offered sound career advice. He was a true gentleman. We worked together later in years with community seminars for his funeral home and he always found time to reach out or offer a big hug when we would meet at conference, funeral functions or just out an about in Elora or Guelph. He had a huge impact on many past, present and future funeral directors and our profession has lost one of the good ones. RIP dear friend and fellow funeral director, you will be missed, Sincerely, Donna-Marie Wilson

I am very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. It was nice to have a brief visit recently. He pushed forward with courage, strength and most comforting was his faith in dealing with this horrible illness. Doug had a gentle kindness towards all and notably his colleagues in funeral service. He was a mentor to many in our local funeral director's association as well as our provincial association.
Condolences and peace to all of Doug's loved ones.

Leslie, Alex, Kayla, Marion and all your families, I am so sad for you in this overwhelming loss. Doug seems to have been in my life forever, but not nearly long enough. He has left an indelible mark on so many, not only through his funeral director skills, but but also because he was a man of strength and purpose. Life offers us opportunities. Doug took them all, and influenced so many along the way. His faith and courage in adversity have modeled such grace, never giving up. Grief knows no boundaries. It is the price of love. May God hold you close. Doug is in His care, safe and pain-free.
Much love to you all in these days.

I was just asking at the last OFSA meeting in Collingwood if Doug Gilcrhist was still a regular at our profession's meetings. And I didn't learn he was in failing health until reading his death announcement today. Doug and I were close in age and with his purchase of McIntyre, Wilkie in 1980 and my return to our family business in 1982 we often met at OFSA meetings. Many of the Friends faith group in my area spoke highly to me over the years of their positive impression of funeral service they had when attedning family funerals at McIntyre, Wilkie. Doug epitomized for me a the quiet, gentlemanly mannerism and wisdom of a true funeral professional. He reminds me of the phrase, "still waters run deep", and I felt a kindred spirit when we met. May Doug's memory be for a blessing. Richard Paul

To all of Dougs family and Leslie we send our heart felt condolences at the passing, of a one of kind , human being. Going to school with him all the way through, playing football, hockey, we had some really great adventures. When i was going to school in Guelph i would drop in and have coffee , lunch or both and sometimes he would put me to work! Definetly interesting! One highlight was when Doug, myself and Pete Lamb drove to Florida in Petes RV for a holiday. In Daytona while bar hopping Doug made a comment that the band sounded great just like the beach boys. I looked on stage and it was Mike love(lead singer for the beach boys) and Jan from Jan and Dean. The 2 had been out as well on a bar hop , walked in and asked the band if they could get up and sing a few beach boys tunes! And they did sing a set full!
He left an indelible mark on me that i will always carry with me with pride. RIP Douglas Peter Alexander Gilchrist
Im going to miss you.

I have many fond memories of a friendship spanning more than 30 years. Doug was there for me and my family in our time(s) of need. 20 years ago, my mother, father and myself sat with Doug to plan her funeral. My mother was very specific in what she wanted. When Doug asked who would be the officiant at her service she quickly replied, "You". Doug laughed and said "that is not something I typically do", she replied "You do now!!. And so it began......
I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for my friend, Doug.
May Doug's journey forth be guided by his Lord.
To Leslie and the family, I extend my heartfelt condolences. May the Lord provide you with comfort as you grieve this great loss. Godbless!!
