On the verge of turning 5, I watched as my sister married the love of her life, John Gillis, at the Winterbourne United Church. I wasn't quite sure what was going on but she was one happy young lady.
John and Shirley had a rich social life which included cross-country skiing, bus tours with friends, regular luncheons with Shirley's relatives and many, many trips to Nova Scotia and Florida. Trips to Northern Ontario and B.C. to visit John's sister and brother were also part of the itinerary. Due in part to my persistent nagging, Shirley and John even visited our Aunt Jean and Uncle Mike, who were living in Turkey at the time.
John volunteered with The Big Brothers and today, his little brother is a husband and father of two boys. Tri Le remains close to our family and has been very helpful to both John and Shirley.
Genial and always interested in a good conversation, John engaged many with both his intellect and his varied interests.
John was very proud of his son, Randy, and daughter, Laurie. He loved children and was a wonderful grandfather to his two granddaughters, Alicia and Tara.
His was a life well-lived.

Dear Cousin Shirley & family. Our Deepest Sympathy to the Gillis/Robinson families. John has been so much part of our lives since the mid 1950's. John won the love, respect & friendship of the Robinson/Mournahan families immediately. We have such fond memories being with John & Shirley at their home, visiting with others & our famous Cousin Luncheons. Cousin John added so greatly to our family gatherings...good fun, good food.. I know we can say that John was truly one of Aunt Ruby's (our mother) favourite nephews. We give thanks for John "John Boy". With Love & Prayers. Cousin Isabel & John Ireland (nee Mournahan).

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your loved one John Gillis. In 1988 then Staff Sergeant Gillis was the recruiting officer and he was part of the panel that hired me. I know there were times that he regretted that decision but I have always been grateful that he saw something in me. Just shy of 36 years later I am still on the job serving the Guelph community and I am thankful every day to have a career I still enjoy. May you rest in peace Sir.
Ray Gordon.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with John for thirty three years. We were beat cops together and worked our way through the ranks. John had an exceptional work ethic and could always be counted on. The City can be proud to know that John was one of their officers. My condolences to the family. He was a fine man and will be missed.

Dear Shirley and Family
My sincerest condolences!
John…always a gentleman … always a smile! He and my husband Kees aka “Pedro” as he was known at the station, loved to chat whenever they would meet up. John was an engaging and very entertaining conversationalist. He will be missed. Rest in Peace John. Nora Groenendyk
