Hello Louise. I was so very sorry to open my Globe on Saturday and see this obituary. Over the years, I have wondered how Helen was doing. It was such a delight to meet her on Parliament Hill, and hear her stories. She was a trailblazer for women journalists, and we are in her debt.

Helen and I were good friends, fellow journalists and art lovers. Her death leaves another hole in my heart, a very special connection lost to my life.
We first met in the early 1980's when I became a freelance visual arts and performance reviewer and writer for the Guelph Mercury. Helen was the paper's Family Editor and wrote about art. We quickly developed a happy rapport.
Helen kindly introduced me to the Guelph Arts Council, and I then wrote for that newsletter.
We lost touch when I returned to Britain in the late '80s, but recently re-connected and she developed an enchanting feline correspondence with my cat. Even mailing a card with Shanta's name and address plain to see.
A donation to the Salvation Army is on its way. With thanks for friendships, good journalism and warm affection.

I’m so sorry to hear of Helen’s passing. She was wonderful to work with. I met Helen about 30 years ago when I began leading the Docent group at the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre (now the Art Gallery of Guelph). This was only one of the many many organizations Helen was involved with. Helen’s journalist skills, easy way with people, and her interest in art made her a natural. Helen dove into every tour she led with gusto, giving excellent tours to all ages. We had great conversations together about the shows we were presenting. I happily remember those times and Helen’s part in making them great.
To this day, I am constantly reminded of Helen’s comment, “Susan, you will never find a volunteer who is NOT busy.” Helen, this is so true! Your interest in people, and your involvement in so many organizations have helped guide my path. Rest Well!

Dear Louise. I will cherish the time I spent with your Mom every Tues morning cleaning her apartment at Arbour trails. We shared many stories and laughs together. I know she looked forward to seeing me every Tues. I am just very sorry that I never got to see her in the last few months. She will always be in my thoughts.
